Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2025
Open Lavs is a volunteer community project. We collect as little data as possible and never sell or share your information with third parties.
Who we are
Open Lavs (openlavs.com) is a community map of gender-inclusive toilets across the UK, run as a sister project to FiveforFive. We are not a company and do not operate commercially.
What information we collect
We collect only what is necessary to run the map:
- Location submissions — when you submit a venue, we store the name, address, coordinates, type, hours, accessibility information, and any notes you provide. We do not collect your name or email address as part of a submission.
- Confirmation votes — when you confirm a location as inclusive, we store a randomly generated device identifier (created locally on your device and stored in your browser) to prevent duplicate votes. This identifier cannot be used to identify you personally.
- Reports — when you report a location, we store the reason and any notes you provide, along with the location ID. We do not collect your name or contact details.
What we do not collect
- We do not collect your name, email address, or any contact information
- We do not track you across websites
- We do not use advertising or analytics services
- We do not use cookies (we use browser localStorage for device identification only)
- We do not collect precise location data — "Near me" uses your device's GPS locally and is never sent to our servers
How we use your information
- Submitted venue details are reviewed by a volunteer moderator and, if approved, displayed publicly on the map
- Device identifiers are used solely to limit confirmation votes to one per device per location
- Reports are reviewed by the moderator to assess whether a location should be removed
Third-party services
Open Lavs uses the following third-party services:
We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any other tracking or advertising services.
Data storage and security
Approved location data is stored in JSON files on our server hosted by IONOS in the EU. We take reasonable steps to protect this data but as a volunteer project cannot guarantee enterprise-level security. Please do not submit any sensitive personal information through the site.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of any data we hold about you. Since we do not collect personal identifiers, we cannot link submissions or reports back to specific individuals. If you have a concern, please contact us at cara@openlavs.com.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
